Orks and Marines

These are from a set of photos taken last September for a post concerning a pair of teams for Killzone. The Orks and Space Marines are very old miniatures and were painted a long time ago but they are still some of my favorites. I would like to write a battle report for one of their engagements and illustrate it with lots of dramatic pictures.

Uh-oh, I'm running out of pictures. Hmm... what to do? Also I think I've exhausted the "Effects" button and don't know what the next step is in my learning process. I would like to setup a little scene to try taking new photos but it's so busy now with Christmas and getting ready to move to Asheville. Perhaps I should wait until after the coming weekend.

Technical Issues

Hmm, some problems appear to be popping up. Everything was going along fine until loading times slowed appreciably and now certain images look broken or screwy to me. My satellite internet provider is terrible and I remember this happening before on diceRolla when working with large numbers of pictures. This is why I thought it best to keep my experimenting here as I sort these issues out. I don't know why this problem happens, if it affects the way other people see things on the blog, or if it is just due to the lousiness of my internet service. Oh well, I don't have any answers so I'll just keep messing around I suppose. Back to the atom mill for me.

This next set of images are from a batch I used on diceRolla back in October in a sort of thank-you note to Col.Hessler of SADOUKAD 16. This was right around the time when I was first becoming really aware of the potential for narrative in photographing miniatures. It is interesting to return to these photos from even just a few months ago with new purpose. On these I have continued my testing of the "Effects" button.

I'm excited about the prospect of putting together a story using my 'Nids, Hive Fleet Hydra, and the new Raptors marines I am now collecting. In fact I'm really interested in attempting to chronicle all the wars waged across my tabletop, especially those for 40k, WHFB, and Warmahordes. That seems like it would be a fun new twist for my hobby. All of that will have to wait quite a while though as I would have lots of painting to do, both in miniatures and scenery, in order to do it well. That's okay as it will give me plenty of time to learn more about photographing my miniatures and working with the pictures on my computer. No need to worry, I'm sure I'll get the hang of this eventually....

Second Contact

Hello again, my goodness it has been some time. I know, I know. I should have posted at least a courtesy update here a long time ago. Things have been humming along at diceRolla so much so that I have completely neglected my other blogs. Apologies to my kind and patient readers. :)

I am still unsure as to what ultimate purpose I shall set CVoS but in the meantime I have decided to use it for some rather experimental things. In these cases there will not always be explanations or exposition so I thank you in advance for bearing with me. As this blog gets far less traffic than my, ahem, efforts at diceRolla, I thought such testing here would be less intrusive.

And so with that out of the way, let the trials begin.

System Redundancy

My 40k mojo is back! At the end of March I went to Adepticon and being around so many people passionate about the hobby restored my excitement for the game. Also it made it quite clear to me that I needed to stop screwing around with side projects and finally get to the army I want to do. So rather than chronically trying to work on six armies at once, I have resolved to focus in earnest on a single primary army. Maybe down the road I'll add a secondary army but I'm confident that my first choice will be able to sustain my interest for a long time.

Despite my rejuvenated enthusiasm for the game, I do not anticipate a similar upswing in posts here. I've started another weblog specifically for items related to my new Space Marines chapter, the Stonecutters. I'm sure I'll still have other 40k-type of projects along the way but most of them will probably be done in the context of my DIY chapter as part of their background or such. Therefore whatever hobby stuff I write about will also probably end up at the new blog. To be clear, I expect The Cold Vacuum of Space to be quiet for the time being.

I of course remain most at active at diceRolla. I may do some experimentation here as I try to think of how best to use this space. Thank you for your patience.

Welcome to The Cold Vacuum of Space, a blog dedicated to the game of Warhammer 40,000. I've been maintaining another blog called diceRolla for about 9 months now and have decided it's time to branch out a bit... well, actually I guess it's not so much branching out as it is focusing in on one particular aspect of my wargaming hobby. Even though I still plan on keeping diceRolla as my primary site for blogging, I feel it would be useful to have a separate place just for those things related to wargaming in the 41st Millennium. There will probably be a lot of cross-over between the two sites as ideas develop and hopefully the best of my 40k content will end up here. My goal is to do my part in helping to develop the 40k family, both online and around the tabletops. I do not know what type of contributions I will be able to make though I can promise that it will be true to my love for the game and for the larger hobby itself, and to generally promote the game in a positive manner. So in a spirit of humility and gratitude, thank you very much for the opportunity to participate in such a vast and exciting community.
